At the first-ever Players Weekend in August 2017, Major League Baseball players wore jerseys with their nicknames on the back. One player — Cleveland Indians shortstop, Francisco Lindor — picked the perfect moniker to express his cheerful, fun-loving nature: “Mr. Smile.” And Lindor gave fans plenty to smile about when he belted a 2-run homer into the stands while wearing his new jersey!
Lindor has explained that he believes smiling is an important part of connecting with fans and teammates alike: “I’ve never been a fan of the guy that makes a great play and then acts like he’s done it 10,000 times — smile, man! We’ve got to enjoy the game.”
We think Lindor is right: Smiling is a great way to generate good will. And it feels great too… as long as you have a smile that’s healthy, and that looks as good as you want it to. But what if you don’t? Here are some things we can do at the dental office to help you enjoy smiling again:
Routine Professional Cleanings & Exams. This is a great place to start on the road toward a healthy, beautiful smile. Even if you are conscientious about brushing and flossing at home, you won’t be able to remove all of the disease-causing dental plaque that can hide beneath the gum line, especially if it has hardened into tartar, but we can do it easily in the office. Then, after a thorough dental exam, we can identify any problems that may be affecting your ability to smile freely, such as tooth decay, gum disease, or cosmetic dental issues.
Cosmetic Dental Treatments. If your oral health is good but your smile is not as bright as you’d like it to be, we can discuss a number of cosmetic dental treatments that can help. These range from conservative procedures such as professional teeth whitening and bonding to more dramatic procedures like porcelain veneers or crowns.
Tooth Replacement. Many people hide their smiles because they are embarrassed by a gap from a missing tooth. That’s a shame, because there are several excellent tooth-replacement options in a variety of price ranges. These include partial and full dentures, bridgework, and dental implants. So don’t let a missing tooth stop you from being Mr. (or Ms.) Smile!

When planning for your new smile, we look at more than the condition of individual teeth. We also step back for the bigger “bite” picture: how do the teeth look and interact with each other?
If we have a normal bite, our teeth are aligned symmetrically with each other. This not only looks aesthetically pleasing with the rest of the face, it also contributes to good function when we chew food. A bad bite (malocclusion) disrupts this mouth-to-face symmetry, impairs chewing and makes hygiene and disease prevention much more difficult.
That's where orthodontics, the dental specialty for moving teeth, can work wonders. With today's advanced techniques, we can correct even the most complex malocclusions — and at any age. Even if your teen years are well behind you, repairing a bad bite can improve both your smile and your dental health.
The most common approach, of course, is braces. They consist of metal or plastic brackets bonded to the outside face of the teeth with a thin metal wire laced through them. The wire attaches to an anchorage point, the back teeth or one created with other appliances, and placed under tension or pressure. The gradual increasing of tension or pressure on the teeth will move them over time.
Braces are versatile and quite effective, but they can be restrictive and highly noticeable. Many people, especially older adults, feel embarrassed to wear them. There is an alternative: clear aligners. These are a series of clear, plastic trays that you wear in sequence, a couple of weeks for each tray. When you change to the next tray in the series, it will be slightly different than its predecessor. As the trays change shape guided by computer-enhanced modeling, the teeth gradually move.
If you're interested in having a poor bite corrected, the first step is a comprehensive orthodontic examination. This looks closely at not only teeth position, but also jaw function and overall oral and general health.
With that we can help you decide if orthodontics is right for you. If so, we'll formulate a treatment plan that can transform your smile and boost your dental health.

Say hello to a beautifully straight smile with help from this clear orthodontic system.
Are you an adult that is dealing with a crooked or misaligned smile? If so, our Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Beach, FL, orthodontist Dr. Josh Goldknopf can help. Find out more about Invisalign, the clear alternative to a straighter smile, and how it could improve your appearance.
Here are just some of the wonderful benefits you’ll reap when you choose to get Invisalign:
A Healthier Smile
Most people don’t realize that a misaligned smile is actually prone to decay, gum disease and injuries. Think about it: If two teeth are overlapping isn’t it much harder to clean it properly and to thoroughly remove plaque? plaque that sits on teeth too long can lead to cavities. By getting a straighter smile you are also promoting better oral health for the long run.
A More Attractive Appearance
A lot of our confidence stems from our appearance. After all, first impressions are often based on the way we look. If you want a smile that exudes success and confidence then you’ll want a smile that you think is perfect. Luckily, getting Invisalign can give you the smile you want so you can feel more confident smiling in public.
A Discreet Approach
When it comes to braces, most people think of the standard bracket-and-wire system. While these systems are ideal for handling more complicated tooth movements they are visible. We know that many adults want to be able to hide their braces but still get a straighter smile. This is where Invisalign comes in. Clear, custom-made aligners fit snugly against the top and bottom teeth, making them far less visible than traditional braces.
Don’t Restrict Your Diet
When wearing traditional braces you’ll have to stay away from certain crunchy, sticky or hard foods that could damage or pull off your braces. This isn’t the case with Invisalign. Just pop out your aligners prior to eating or drinking then brush your teeth and place them back in when you’re done. Enjoy all of your favorite foods while also working to get a straighter smile.
Keep Teeth Clean
It can be challenging to be able to brush around brackets and wires and often times those with braces find themselves dealing with decay if they aren’t careful. Luckily, since Invisalign aligners are removable you can easily clean and maintain a healthy smile without having to stress about flossing around or between your braces.
The Brace Place Orthodontics provides comprehensive orthodontic treatment to patients of all ages living in the Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra, FL, areas. If you are interested in discussing Invisalign or other orthodontic options with us then give us a call.
As December brings the old year to a close, it’s a great time to set goals for the year to come. This might include a major life change, such as a new job—or even a new romance! If one of these items is on your list for 2019, a smile makeover may be just the thing to help you get there.
Having a great smile can give your self-confidence a real boost. It can also affect how you are perceived by others. According to a survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, 99.7% of adults believe a smile is an important social asset and 96% believe an attractive smile makes a person more appealing to members of the opposite sex. At the same time, three quarters of adults feel that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success.
If you aren’t pleased with your smile and want a new look, we can help you figure out which cosmetic dental treatments could be right for you. The answer might be something simple—like an overall brightening of the smile with professional teeth whitening, or fixing a small crack or chip in a single tooth with cosmetic tooth bonding. If you’re unhappy with worn-down or crooked teeth, dental veneers or orthodontic treatment might be the way to go. In fact, many adults find that orthodontic treatment with clear aligners is a great way to get a beautiful, straight smile without drawing attention to the fact that a makeover is in progress.
Of course, it’s not only important for your smile to look good but also for your whole mouth to stay healthy. So if you are experiencing any tooth pain, unusual mouth sores or gum problems, it’s time for you to come in for an exam. And if it’s been a while since you’ve had a dental checkup and professional teeth cleaning, why not make an appointment for early in the year? Don’t start the new year with last year’s dental problems!
