RetainerIf you have ever undergone orthodontic treatment, you probably know that wearing braces is a process. After having them placed onto the teeth to wearing them for months or even years, you may think that you have finished with your treatment once your dentist removes your braces from your teeth. However, wearing a retainer is crucial to helping your teeth remain straight and beautiful for years to come. Find out more about the importance of a retainer with Dr. Josh Goldknopf at The Brace Place with locations in Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra, FL.

What can I expect throughout the braces process?
During your orthodontic treatment, your experience will differ depending on the type of braces you have. If you have traditional metal braces, you will wear your brackets and wires permanently on your teeth during treatment and see your orthodontist about once a month for maintenance visits. Other types of braces like clear aligners will require less frequent visits and not stay permanently attached to your teeth during your treatment. Your orthodontist can best explain what to expect during your orthodontic treatment at a consultation. However, after your treatment, regardless of the kind of braces you wear, you will need to wear a retainer.

Why is wearing a retainer after braces important?
Once your braces are removed from the teeth, they are susceptible to moving back to their old positions. A retainer helps your teeth remain in place and settle into their new positions without moving or drifting. Additionally, as a younger child’s body grows, their teeth may shift some. A retainer also helps the teeth remain in their corrected position during this process.

Wearing a Retainer After Braces in Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra, FL
Though you may think that your orthodontic care is finished after braces, you will need to wear a retainer for up to several years after your treatment. The length of time you will need to wear your retainer depends on your teeth and their treatment plan. The risk of movement is highest during the first few months when you will need to wear your retainer at all times. After this initial time, you can wear your retainer only at night.
