How your orthodontist in Jacksonville Beach, FL can help you have a healthy smile

People often wonder if they can get cavities when they have braces. The short answer is YES, but the truth is, there is a lot you can do to prevent cavities from forming, even if you have braces.

Dr. Josh Goldknopf at The Brace Place offers a wide range of orthodontic services, including cavity prevention. He has two convenient office locations in Jacksonville Beach, and Ponte Vedra, FL to help you have a healthy smile.

Before you are fitted for braces, it’s very important to have any decay treated by your dentist. After all of the decay is treated, then you are ready for orthodontic treatment.

Traditional braces consist of brackets, which are attached to your teeth, and wires, which are attached to the brackets.

To prevent cavities, you need to remove plaque, which contains millions of harmful bacteria that cause cavities. This means you have to clean in between your teeth, which can be difficult with brackets and wires.

When you brush your teeth, remember to brush after meals and before you go to bed. Try to brush areas separately, first above the wire and along the gum line, second, brush the bracket area, and third, brush below the wire. It may be helpful to invest in a sonic or electric toothbrush because of its pulsating action.

When you floss, remember to floss at least once each day. You will have to pull the floss underneath the wire, so you can get the floss in between your teeth. To do this, you can use a floss-threading tool. This tool allows you to thread the floss in between your teeth, just like a needle and thread.

You can also use an interdental brush, which is a tiny, cylindrical brush. The interdental brush can be used to gently clean around the brackets and wires. A toothpick is also helpful to clean small areas and between your teeth.

You can get cavities even with braces, but you can do a lot to prevent cavities too. To find out more about cavity prevention during orthodontic treatment and beyond, call Dr. Josh Goldknopf at The Brace Place, in Jacksonville Beach, FL, at (904) 249-0037. Call today!
