Braces play an important role in your child's oral health. Dr. Josh Goldknopf of The Brace Place Orthodontics in Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra, FL, recommends orthodontic solutions to improve physical "orofacial" appearance. Orthodontic treatment fixes crooked or crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, incorrect jaw position and other jaw disorders.

When should I consider braces for my child?

Orthodontists advise wearing braces during the ages of 10-to-14 because the head and mouth are developing and teeth are more likely to straighten but make sure your child sees the orthodontist by age seven.

By age seven, the first permanent molars and incisors have come and your orthodontist in Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra can evaluate teeth and create a plan to ensure proper growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment also helps:

  • properly develop the upper and lower dental arches
  • increase space for incoming permanent teeth
  • avoid permanent tooth extractions
  • eliminate swallowing or speech problems

Treatment duration varies from one person to another but most people need to wear braces between 18 and 30 months, followed by wearing of a retainer from a few months to two years so teeth remain straight. There are several types of retainers (removable hawley wire retainers, removable clear plastic retainers and bonded permanent retainers) so ask your dentist which works best for you. In some cases, patients need to wear a permanent retainer.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic appliances come in different materials, metal, ceramic, or plastic, and different appearances and functions, removable or brackets bonded to the teeth.

All braces pretty much work the same way though. They place a constant and controlled force on teeth. The gentle pressure directs teeth to their corrected position.

In a perfect world, everyone would have perfectly aligned teeth. However, the reality is that plenty of people have poorly aligned teeth, crowded teeth, and crooked smiles. Aside from the cosmetic problems that these concerns raise, they can also make your teeth tougher to clean, which increases your risk for developing gum disease and tooth decay. Crooked teeth could likewise result in swallowing and chewing problems as well as difficulty in pronouncing specific sounds. In turn, this could place unnecessary stress and pressure on your chewing muscles, resulting in jaw pain.

Fortunately, here at The Brace Place Orthodontics in Jacksonville Beach and Ponta Vedra, FL, orthodontist Dr. Josh Goldknopf can address all of these concerns. Aside from the cosmetic benefits you receive from a properly aligned bite, the right orthodontic treatment plan can also offer the following oral health benefits:

Clean Your Teeth More Properly

Misaligned and crooked teeth can create nooks and crevices that are very difficult to clean thoroughly. This can cause bacteria buildup, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, dental infections, and other harmful dental issues.

Improve Your Chewing and Speech

Certain kinds of bite issues could make it hard for you to chew and speak properly. Orthodontics can fix these bite concerns to improve your chewing and speech.

Realign Your Jaw

A poorly aligned jaw cam result in TMJ dysfunction, which, in turn, leads to jaw pain and weakened teeth that could chip and wear out prematurely. In some cases, this pain could even radiate to the shoulders and neck. A properly aligned jaw could save you all the hassle and pain later on.

Relief from Sinus Pain

A bad bite can also narrow your airways and lead to pressure in your sinuses. The right orthodontic plan can fix your bite, which can clear your sinuses and make breathing more comfortable for you.

Take note that depending on the severity of your misaligned bite, your orthodontist may recommend one or more of these orthodontic procedures:

  • Braces
  • Retainers
  • Removable appliances
  • Headgear
  • Oral surgery

How Invisalign orthodontic treatment from your dentist in Jacksonville Beach, FL, can help your smile

Have you been thinking about straightening your smile? If so, you may have heard about Invisalign. Invisalign has revolutionized orthodontic treatment, making treatment comfortable and discreet. Dr. Josh Goldknopf at The Brace Place Orthodontics offers a full range of orthodontic services, including Invisalign. He has two convenient office locations in Jacksonville Beach, and Ponte Vedra, Florida to help your smile.

Let’s take a closer look at Invisalign. These are just a few frequently asked questions and answers about Invisalign treatment:

Why is Invisalign revolutionary?

Invisalign uses clear plastic trays, known as aligners instead of conventional brackets and wires.

What are the advantages of Invisalign?

Invisalign is comfortable because the aligners are made of smooth plastic, making them very easy to wear. Invisalign is also virtually invisible because the aligners are clear, so people around you won’t notice them. You can also remove the aligners to brush and floss your teeth, and when you eat, so you can enjoy the foods you love.

What dental problems can Invisalign fix?

Invisalign can correct most of the alignment and positioning issues just like conventional braces. Invisalign can correct overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite. It can also straighten rotated, crowded teeth to give you a straight, beautiful smile.

How does Invisalign work?

Dr. Goldknopf will give you your first set of aligners, which you wear for 2 weeks, then you move up to another set, which you also wear for 2 weeks. You progress to a new set of aligners every 2 weeks until your treatment is complete. You will visit Dr. Goldknopf every few weeks so he can monitor your progress.

How long does Invisalign treatment take?

The entire process takes between 9 to 15 months.

Metallic braces are one of the most common and effective tools to treat bite and alignment issues. Ceramic braces work using a similar methodology to metallic braces, but they are made from a tooth-colored material so as to be a more discreet option. Here are some of the benefits and differences for each option:

Metallic and Ceramic Braces

Metallic and ceramic braces' systems both consist of small brackets being placed on your smile, with each tooth being connected by a wire. Through gentle force and pressure, the teeth are gradually shifted into perfect alignment. Metal braces are typically more affordable, with the appliances also tending to be more durable due to their stainless steel construction. Although modern braces are generally smaller and more compact than in the past, they are still the most conspicuous option.

Ceramic braces do the same thing as metal braces, but the brackets are clear and blend in with the teeth, making them less noticeable than traditional metallic braces. Ceramic braces are also an effective and proven treatment method for common orthodontic problems, but the brackets may not be as durable as metal.

If you're an adult, wearing metal braces may not seem very appealing. Fortunately, Invisalign, offered by your Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville, FL, Orthodontist, Dr. Josh Goldknopf, provides a much more discreet straightening choice.

The Invisalign system uses clear aligner trays to reposition your teeth. The transparent trays fit your upper and lower teeth snugly and don't detract from your appearance. You'll be given a series of trays and will wear each set in the series for about two weeks.

Invisalign is a convenient orthodontic option

Despite the nearly invisible appearance of your aligner trays, it may not always be convenient to wear them. Fortunately, you can remove them for a few hours if you're attending a dinner or other event. You'll normally wear the trays for 20 to 22 hours per day.

Invisalign treatment won't require any changes to your diet, unlike metal or ceramic braces. You'll remove your trays when you eat or drink anything other than water. As soon as you finish eating or drinking, you'll rinse your trays and put them back in your mouth.

Your oral hygiene routine won't need to change just because you're straightening your teeth. After you remove the trays, you can brush and floss normally.

You're never too old for Invisalign

Whether you've had an issue with your teeth since childhood, or you've noticed that your teeth have begun to shift in the last few years, Invisalign is an excellent option. Invisalign not only straightens teeth but closes gaps and is an effective treatment for underbites, overbites, crossbites and open bites.

Your treatment may not take as long as you think

Your Invisalign treatment may be completed much sooner than you anticipated. In fact, you may only need to wear your aligner trays for six to 12 months if you're an adult.

You won't have to make time for frequent dental visits

If you choose metal or ceramic braces, you'll need to visit your dentist often for wire adjustments. Since Invisalign is a wire-free system, there are no adjustments. You'll only need to schedule follow-up visits every six weeks.

Transform your smile with Invisalign. Call your Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville, FL, Orthodontist, Dr. Josh Goldknopf, at (904) 222-8588 to schedule your appointment.
